Who We Are

Walden is a coed overnight camp in Northern Michigan for ages 6 to 15 (i.e. teens who will be entering 10th grade). We’re in the state’s Lower Peninsula on a pristine 100 acres outside the city of Cheboygan. Walden stretches along Long Lake, a clear, spring-fed body of water, and camp's terrain ranges from lush meadows to old-growth forests.

As a traditional summer camp, we offer a diverse range of activities from land and water sports to horseback riding; from rockets and radio to the visual and performing arts. Walden campers roast marshmallows, sing silly songs, star-gaze and drink “bug juice.” And they do not-so-traditional stuff, like mountain biking, lapidary (polishing rocks!) and yoga. Kids choose their own activity program and, with the guidance of a committed and highly professional staff, find out what it’s like to be “on their own” for part of the summer.

Who We Are!

2012 will be Walden's 53rd summer. Why do campers love it here? For the adventures, the friendships and an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Our campers even love the food (we’re not kidding; just wait until you try the vegetarian lasagna!).

Our philosophy is this: Summer camp should be a place where kids feel safe and cared for; where they develop independence and gain skills that feed their self-confidence; and where they form lasting friendships and craft lifelong memories. That’s The Walden Way. And as thousands of former campers will tell you, it’s an unforgettable way to spend the summer… Come see for yourself!
